The availability and prevalence of AI is increasing on a daily basis. I believe that we have long surpassed the moment where we can 'ignore' this new technology — instead, I choose to engage with AI consciously and with integrity.
I use AI only when I believe it will meaningfully add to the quality of my work. I use AI tools for research purposes and to support my strategic thinking when working on a project. I use AI tools for graphic design support or suggestions when starting a project from scratch. Occasionally I ask AI for feedback on wording or writing style, especially when working on larger and more repetitive pieces of work (e.g. toolkits in which each written piece needs to structurally and tonally match all others). I do not allow AI to write content for me in any context. I use AI to think along with me and to offer clarity on things I have already written myself.
The principles I apply when approaching AI tools are:
- Prompt mindfully: I only approach AI with a prompt or question after careful reflection on what I hope to get out of the interaction. I make every effort not to use AI tools mindlessly or simply because it feels 'easy' to do so.
- Establish boundaries: I use AI to support my work, not to do work for me. I set clear boundaries for what I will and will not allow AI to do with and for me, and I never share any sensitive information with these tools. I am mindful of client confidentiality and do not input client or project details into AI tools without consent. I also don't produce synthetic images with AI.
- Maintain ethical standards: I am picky about which AI tools I will engage with — I try not to engage with AI platforms with poor or unclear ethics guidelines, and I avoid those that do not have robust and clear privacy policies. My current preferred platforms are Perplexity for research purposes and Claude (Anthropic) for design and writing support. I am also beginning to explore Thaura to better understand its capabilities. (Note that I do not and will not use ChatGPT.)
- Stay current: While I'm not one to read tech news on a daily basis, I make an effort to keep up with developments in the AI space. These developments impact my choices around how to use the technology, which privacy settings to engage, and which platforms to use.
I am also aware of the large environmental footprint that AI tools have, including land, energy, and water use. For this reason, I use AI only when I feel it is necessary or will meaningfully improve my work output, and I make sure to prompt the tool clearly and in a focused manner in order to not waste unnecessary resources.
AI is an emerging technology, and my approach to this technology is a work in progress. I aim to keep up to date with developments in this space and continue learning as I go. As such, this policy is likely to change and adapt over time.
